Child Life Zone opens in VCU Children’s Hospital

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The new Child Life Zone is open at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU and there are plenty of opportunities for patients to heal while having fun. According to a release from the hospital by Kate Marino, the Child Life Zone is located in the Children's Tower and will provide patients with several interactive ways to cope with the stress of medical settings. The Child Life Zone is 3,400 square feet and was made possible through an anonymous $2 million donation as well as two $300,000 donations from Estes Express Lines and Meta. Those who are able to visit the space can expect education mixed with fun including: A medical play area with interactive exhibits to help kids feel at ease A touch screen digital sensory table A virtual reality station A makerspace with 3D printer and other technology for pursuing creative endeavors An arcade and gaming lounge A photo booth The Teammates for Kids Foundation designed and constructed the Child Life Zone, and it is one of only 15 throughout the world. There are similarities throughout the zones, but the Richmond location will include local tributes -- including a "clubhouse modeled after Native American longhouses of regional tribes" and Virginia sports teams jerseys decorating the walls. Patients will be able to use the Child Life Zone at their discretion depending on their medical status and needs, or they may have the opportunity to participate in structured sessions with a specialist to work on certain health goals.
