Clover Hill High School recent graduate injured in Brown University shooting
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A recent Clover Hill High School graduate was one of the nine students injured in a shooting at Brown University over the weekend, school officials confirmed.
A spokesperson with Chesterfield County Public Schools confirmed to 8News that Matthew Wang graduated from Clover Hill High School in 2025. Video from the school division shows Wang was the first speaker at the May 20 graduation ceremony.
"I was grateful for the opportunity to speak with Matthew earlier this week. Anyone who knows Matthew knows the kind of student he was at Clover Hill: thoughtful, humble and driven," said David Altizer, the school principal, in a statement. "Those qualities stood out to our faculty then, and there’s no doubt they have continued to define him in his college experience. Our Clover Hill community is rallying around Matthew in every way we can, and we will continue to keep him, his family and all those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.”
On Saturday, Dec. 13, a gunman killed two students and injured nine others inside a Brown University building in Providence, RI, according to WPRI 12 News.
Earlier in the week, 8News confirmed that Midlothian High School graduate Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman neuroscience major, was one of the two students killed in the shooting.
The second Brown University student killed in the shooting was identified as Ella Cook, of Alabama.
Several days later, authorities identified the suspect as 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, who is also suspected of killing an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts.
