Coast-to-coast charity bike ride stops in Richmond to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A group of college students biking across the country to fight Alzheimer’s disease will be making a stop in Richmond this week.

The organization, Bike4Alz, is made up of 11 riders from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Western Kentucky University who are currently on a 10-week journey from San Francisco to Virginia Beach.

The team is scheduled to arrive at the University of Richmond around 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 24. Local fraternity members will welcome the group at the Phi Gamma Delta house on campus, at 22 Old Fraternity Row.

Since 2010, Bike4Alz has raised more than $700,000 for Alzheimer’s research through similar rides. Their goal for the 2025 ride is to top $150,000 in donations. Proceeds will go toward research grants for the Alzheimer’s Association and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky.

On Friday, July 25, the team will host a fundraiser at Gus’ Bar & Grill from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Then, the riders will attend the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game at The Diamond. The public is encouraged to join them in the stands behind home plate.

The final leg of the journey will take the group through Williamsburg before reaching the finish line at the Virginia Beach boardwalk on Sunday, July 27 — where they’ll dip their front wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizing the end of their coast-to-coast ride that began with a back wheel dip in the Pacific.
