Colonial Downs to hold Kentucky Derby watch parties Saturday

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- In celebration of Derby Day, horse racing fans in Central Virginia can still get a taste of one of the biggest days in horse racing on Saturday.

Colonial Downs Racetrack and Rosie’s Richmond will host the 151st Kentucky Derby at the Churchill Downs Racetrack watch parties on Saturday, May 3, welcoming race fans and providing free seating in the Jockey’s Club, food and drink specials.

According to an announcement, Colonial Downs in New Kent and Rosie’s Richmond will be "Central Virginia’s premier locations to watch and wager on the first leg of horseracing’s Triple Crown."

“The Road to the Kentucky Derby ran right through Colonial Downs as American Promise secured his spot in the field with his dominating victory during March’s Virginia Derby,” said Dan Cuic, General Manager of Rosie’s New Kent at Colonial Downs Racetrack. “This will be s special day of fun, entertainment, and exciting racing for new and returning guests. Whether you sample one of our Derby Day cocktails or breakout your best race day attire for our hat contest, we promise a memorable Derby Day experience at Colonial Downs!”

Virginia race fans got to see American Promise win this year's Virginia Derby -- serving as the "Commonwealth’s first-ever Kentucky Derby qualifier race" and now will have the chance to compete in Saturday's race.

Rosie’s Richmond will also host a free Kentucky Derby watch party, which includes food, drink, entertainment and more.

The Kentucky Derby is self-described as one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. It has been held at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May every year since 1875. During the Derby, 20 Thoroughbred racehorses run 1.25 miles-long race.
