‘Commonwealth Listening Tour’ visits local schools, looks to strengthen public education landscape

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia leaders are making several stops across the state in the coming weeks with the launch of the "Commonwealth Listening Tour."

The initiative, an effort by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), looks to strengthen the state's public K-12 schools and better support teachers and students through a series of listening sessions across the Commonwealth.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger's (D) administration kicked off the tour on Wednesday, March 4, in Hampton with a roundtable discussion.

Per its website, the "Commonwealth Listening Tour" sessions invite educators, division leaders, parents, students and community members to engage in conversations about education in the state. The public will have the opportunity to share what's working well and suggest how state leaders can ensure every student has access to a high-quality education.

Some of the listening session topics include remaining challenges in statewide education efforts, ongoing support in literacy and math instruction, students' preparedness for college or post-graduate careers and strategies to retain talented teachers.

VDOE has confirmed two more dates for its listening tour, including one in Central Virginia:

  • Monday, March 9, 6 p.m., at Gloucester High School, 699 T.C. Walker Road
  • Thursday, March 12, 6 p.m., at Cumberland Middle School, 16 School Road

Additional dates, when available, will be posted on the VDOE website. For more information, visit Commonwealth Listening Tour: Speak Up for Virginia’s Future.
