Community to honor life, legacy of Hopewell City School Board member Linda Hyslop with memorial service

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- A memorial service will be held on Sunday for the community to honor the life and legacy of late Hopewell City School Board member Linda Hyslop.

According to a city spokesperson, the Hopewell community is invited to attend the memorial service for Hyslop at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, in the auditorium at Hopewell High School, located at 400 Mesa Dr. in Hopewell.

The city said doors will open for the memorial service at 2:30 p.m.

Hopewell City Public Schools announced on Dec. 21 that Hyslop had died following 60 years of service with the school district, including more than a decade as a school board member.

A city spokesperson said Hyslop was a graduate of Hopewell High School, H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College and Virginia State University.

She reportedly returned to Hopewell to teach at Woodlawn Elementary School in 1967, later becoming its assistant principal and principal.

She later served as the school system's assistant superintendent for instruction beginning in 1997 and officially “retired” in 2010.

Afterward, served as a division liaison for the Virginia Department of Education and the College of William and Mary, was executive director of the Virginia Association for Teaching, Learning and Leading, and returned to serve on the School Board of HCPS from 2014 until her passing.

"Linda served her community through the John Randolph Foundation Board, the Brightpoint Community College Board, the regional school boards of CodeRVA and the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, and the Rotary Club of Hopewell," the spokesperson said. "A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, she was also the Blue Devils’ biggest fan, faithfully attending nearly every football and basketball home game."
