Conexus gives Richmond-area kids more than clear vision — it gives them confidence

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Conexus brings kids in Richmond-area schools more than just the gift of sight. It also brings the gift of confidence.

8News has partnered with Conexus for its annual Gift of Light campaign for seven years. The campaign helps children in the Richmond area gain access to optometrists and prescription eyewear. This year's push has just entered week four.

It can be extremely frustrating for students to try and get through the school day without clear vision. Basic tasks like reading and writing can be a headache. Through Conexus, children get to see those obstacles removed.

Conexus has a variety of frame options available to kids, including brands like Nike. Children in need get to browse through a case of frames and choose the ones they like best. Then, Conexus handles fitting those frames with lenses matched to their prescription.

Finally, the kids receive their glasses during what's called the "Unveiling" -- and it's a magical moment.

"It's amazing, it truly is, because -- a lot of times, they're in kindergarten, too, and it's like, 'Wow, I'm seeing the world crisp, in this ... in almost a different way,'" said Paul Mallory, the Communities in Schools (CIS) Coordinator for Chesterfield County Public Schools. "And it's a really beautiful moment to experience."

Mallory said he's watched as these kids go on to perform better academically because of this gift from Conexus. They're also less disruptive and overall happier.

Parents who shared testimonials with Conexus and 8News feel similarly. In a letter to Conexus, a parent described this gift of confidence as priceless, saying her child adored his stylish new glasses.

“My baby needed a reason to be excited again, to smile from ear to ear, to look at himself in the mirror with pride -- and you gave him that and more," the letter reads.
