Coyner and Dougherty make final push in Virginia House District 75 race

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — With Election Day less than a week away, voters in Virginia’s House of Delegates District 75 are preparing to choose between incumbent Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner and Democratic challenger Lindsey Dougherty.

"We are busy door-knocking," Coyner said. "So a lot of time spent out in the community talking to voters at their door."

Dougherty said she’s doing the same.

"[We're] out knocking doors every single day, calling neighbors every single day, making sure that we aren’t leaving any portion of the district untouched," she said.

District 75 includes the City of Hopewell, part of Prince George County and part of Chesterfield County — where Coyner previously served on the Chesterfield School Board before entering state politics.

Coyner said now, she's focused on strengthening the county’s job market.

"Chesterfield is just at a pivotal place, where we're going to really see the benefits of so many amazing businesses come here," Coyner said.

Dougherty, who previously ran for the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors, said her focus for the county is on building a stronger sense of community.

"Chesterfield and the district as a whole, I think that we just need to have more community-supported leaders," Dougherty said. "We need to have more community-supported local businesses."

Across the district, Dougherty said she wants to strengthen the economy, improve access to affordable health care and support education.

"Looking at modernizing the state funding formula for schools is something that I'm very interested in doing," she said. "That's not only going to help all of our schools, but especially the more rural communities."

Coyner said education is also a top priority, along with public safety and affordability.

"I've worked on affordable housing and education, where those two things meet to support kids in the best future possible for a long time," Coyner said. "I'm a big believer that we should have less government in our lives and more control of the dollars we’re spending in our household."

Early voting in Virginia ends on Saturday, Nov. 1. Voters can cast their ballots on Election Day next week on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
