Did you know you can text 911 if you’re a Prince George County resident?

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Prince George County residents, did you know you can text 911 if you are in an emergency?

In a Facebook post, the Prince George County Police Department shared that residents can text 911 when they're not able to call.

This feature is beneficial for those who may be in an emergency but are unable to talk safely -- such in situations like home invasions, domestic disputes or other incidents where talking may not be safe.

The police department also said this feature can help those who may be deaf, hard of hearing or have trouble with speech.

The Prince George County Police Department recommends the following tips for texting 911:

  • Do not put dashes or other characters in when texting 911.
  • In the initial text, send the location and the type of emergency happening.
  • Do not use any slang or abbreviations.
  • Prepare to answer questions and follow the 911 Center's instructions.
  • Photos and videos cannot be sent to the 911 Center.
