PHOTOS: South Hill firefighters brave stormy weather, floodwaters to help residents

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- South Hill firefighters were out in force on Tuesday as heavy downpours caused significant flooding throughout Mecklenburg County.

Central Virginia has endured several severe storms over the past few weeks. With the ground as damp as it is, the flood risk has remained high. The week of Sunday, July 13 has proven particularly challenging for the region, with many localities seeing flash floods.

On Wednesday, July 16, the South Hill Fire Department shared photos of some of the emergencies its crews responded to and the high water they encountered on Tuesday, July 15. According to officials, Mecklenburg saw an "extraordinary amount" of rainfall in a short amount of time.

South Hill crews kept extremely busy. They aided stranded drivers, answered calls about flooding both outdoors and indoors, responded to crash scenes and evacuated homes.

"We are proud to report that although it was a challenging day, it was also a very successful one, and we would like to remind everyone to exercise caution and never attempt to drive through flooded areas," the department said.
