DNC to hold voter registration event at Virginia Commonwealth University

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As part of a nationwide effort, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will be hosting a voter registration event at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) on Tuesday.

People can head to The Pace Center at VCU at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16 to learn more about registering to vote in the state of Virginia.

The DNC is hosting more than 50 voter registration events throughout 27 states and territories as part of programming for National Voter Registration Week of Action -- which aims to engage voters early.

From voter registration drives to days of action, this year the committee is working with several agencies to meet voters where they are, according to a release.

In addition to VCU, events are being held at other places of higher education throughout the country including the University of Arizona, Morehouse College, the University of Pennsylvania and more.

Additionally, DNC Vice Chair for Civic Engagement Reyna Walters Morgan is expected to be in attendance at the voter registration event.

According to data from the Virginia Department of Elections, in August of this year, there were 653 new voters that registered within the city of Richmond alone.

Last week, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order that reportedly intends to "ensure the accuracy of Virginia voter rolls" through the coordination of the Virginia Department of Elections and federal agencies like the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

A spokesperson for Youngkin said that this order will focus on removing ineligible voters from the rolls in accordance with state and federal law.
