Dominion Energy prepares for potential power outages amidst ongoing winter weather

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As winter weather continues to blanket the region with snow and strong winds, Dominion Energy crews are working around the clock to prevent and respond to potential power outages.

Although few outages have been reported thus far, the utility company is taking proactive measures to minimize disruptions. Crews are closely monitoring power lines and stocking up on extra repair materials to ensure a quick response if the storm causes damage.

According to Jeremy Slayton, a spokesperson for Dominion Energy, the biggest concern is the possibility of snow turning into ice and sleet, which can accumulate on power lines, weighing them down and potentially causing them to snap.

“We are very prepared for any outages that occur, and that's why it's so important for us to monitor the forecast for many days in advance,” Slayton said. “That way, we know where to stage crews and have equipment ready so that when outages do happen, our crews can respond as quickly as possible.”

Hundreds of crew members are on standby, ready to patrol and respond to affected areas. If you do see crews out on the road, steer clear.

"When you're talking about black ice, you never know when you're going to hit a slick spot in the road," Slayton said. "So, if you're driving and you see our crews on the side of the road, just use extra caution so you don't create additional problems."

Slayton also warned residents to stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines, as they may still be energized and pose a serious safety risk.

Customers can track and report outages using Dominion Energy’s app, ensuring a faster response time from repair teams.

As the storm continues, residents are urged to stay indoors, stay informed, and prepare for possible power disruptions.
