Driver dead, passenger injured after hitting concrete pillar on I-295 in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 75-year-old driver is dead and a woman is injured after a vehicle veered off Interstate 295 South and hit a concrete pillar in Hanover County.

At around 12:07 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, Virginia State Police troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-295 southbound near Polegreen Road.

According to state troopers, a 2021 silver Toyota RAV4 was traveling south when it veered off the left side of the road and into the median. The car hit a concrete pillar of the Polegreen Road overpass. It then stopped on the left shoulder of the road.

The driver was a 75-year-old man from Williamsburg, and he has been pronounced dead at the scene. A 70-year-old woman, who was in the front passenger seat, was taken to VCU Medical Center with injuries considered life-threatening.

State police is still investigating this crash.
