Driver experiencing possible medical emergency crashes into Fairfield Middle School in Henrico
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver who police say may have been experiencing a medical emergency ran off the road and crashed into Fairfield Middle School's small gymnasium in Henrico County Thursday morning.
At 8:37 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to Fairfield Middle School, located along Nine Mile Road, for the report of a vehicle that had crashed into the small gymnasium.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found the vehicle with a man inside. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a possible medical emergency.
Officials said the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the vehicle ran off the road at Cedar Fork and Nine Mile Road onto school property.
The vehicle reportedly hit "several pieces of school property" before coming to rest against the building.
Police said there were no reported injuries to students or staff.
In the aftermath of the crash, the school division shared the following message with parents and guardians:
Fairfield Middle School Families and Staff:
I’m reaching out to let you know about a car accident that occurred this morning on our campus. All students and staff are safe, but a driver of a vehicle suffered a medical emergency and their vehicle ran into the small gym. EMS and Henrico Police responded to the scene.
We ask that you join us in sending healing thoughts for the driver’s well-being. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of Fairfield Middle School. We are continuing on our normal schedule today.
Henrico County Building Inspections staff were on scene assessing the building, and the Henrico County Police Crash Team will reportedly continue to investigate the crash.
