Expert gives tips on smart sports betting for Super Bowl LX
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As Super Bowl LX approaches, we’re giving you tips on how to bet responsibly on either the New England Patriots or the Seattle Seahawks.
According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), 68 million Americans will wager about $1.76 billion.
The Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) provides a helpline for education and awareness and training for people struggling with sports gambling. Dr. Carolyn Hawley, the president of VCPG, said the speed, repetitive nature and rush of adrenaline from betting works with the dopamine neurotransmitters and can accelerate the addictive process.
“We're living in a world where watching a sporting event isn't about watching the sporting event,” Hawley said. “Mobile sports players represent about 22% of all of our callers and our calls to our helpline are up 50%.”
Sports betting is now legal in 40 states and districts, with mobile sports betting being legal in 30 states. Ongoing legislation in 2026 could increase the overall revenue potential for sports gambling.
Hawley gave a few tips to those who plan to gamble on the big game:
- Set times on financial limits before you start, not after you lose
- Never gamble to cope with stress or to pay bills
- Don’t borrow money
- Don’t let gambling interfere with personal relationships
Anyone struggling with a gambling problem or know a friend or a loved one can call or text the VCPG’s confidential toll-free helpline, 1-888-532-3500 or visit vcpg.net.
