Four of the 11 speed cameras in Richmond school zones spray painted
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Four of the 11 speed cameras near Richmond Public Schools have been spray painted, according to the Richmond Police Department.
The four cameras cameras are near Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts, Lucille M. Brown Middle School, Huguenot High School and Swansboro Elementary.
A local company is getting them cleaned up, and the department said they should still be working. Police did not have information on a suspect.
The speed cameras were installed last year in school zones to encourage drivers to slow down on the roads. The camera near Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts began mailing citations to speeding drivers in March, and the other cameras in October.
As of January, Richmond Police said nearly 27,000 citations had been mailed since the 11 cameras were installed.
Speed cameras operate on days when school is in session from 7:15 to 9:15 a.m. or 7:45 to 9:45 a.m., and from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. or 2:45 to 4:45 p.m.
Two more speed cameras near Thomas Jefferson High School and Richmond Technical School for the Arts should be installed by Feb. 26.
