Gear up for the second annual Virginia Birding Classic

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The second annual Virginia Birding Classic will be hosted in Richmond this year, with registration open until early April.

"The Virginia Birding Classic is a statewide birding competition in which teams of birders search the public lands of Virginia every spring for as many species as they can find in 24 hours," said the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR).

The event will take place from April 15 to May 15. Registration is open from Feb 12 to April 10, with all registration proceeds going towards the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program.

The program awards annual grants to non-profit programs that focus on connecting the youth with the outdoors.

How does the Bird Classic work?

  1. Pick a team name and register online. Attendees must register their team by April 10. Those under 16 years old can register for free, but must be accompanied by an adult who is registered.
  2. Pick when exactly your team will go birding. Your team is to choose a consecutive 24-hour period between the event dates to go birding. You can do this at parks across the Commonwealth, including federal, state, county or municipal lands. Once there, you are to identify as many bird species as possible within your time limit.
  3. Share your team's results. Your team should then submit one official team eBird trip report to Virginia eBird. Final eBird trip reports must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on May 17.

Other additional documents needed for the Birding Classic can be found on the DWR's website.
