Goochland man arrested for attempted murder at Hanover County home

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Goochland man was arrested after an attempted murder on Friday evening at a Hanover County home.

At 6:56 p.m. on March 7, Hanover deputies responded to suspicious situation report at the 6000 block of Pond Grass Road. According to the sheriff's office, the person who called reported that a young man was on his front porch banging on the door and throwing up.

After deputies arrived, they spoke to a 21-year-old man who said he was assaulted and shot at before leaving a home on Walnut Grove Road. Deputies discovered that the offense occurred at the 8000 block of Walnut Grove Road.

Three individuals were confronted when the deputies arrived, even though the suspect had left the scene. The sheriff's office confirmed that a search warrant was obtained and there was proof of an altercation in the home -- a hole in the wall, as well as projectile from a firearm.

22-year-old Kayshawn Smith of Goochland was identified as the primary suspect.

Smith was charged with the following:

  • Discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Attempted murder
  • Burglary at night with the intent to commit a felony
  • Use of a firearm in commission of a felony

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office would like to extend thanks to the Harrisonburg Police Department. On March 8, Smith was found by the Harrisonburg police and taken to jail without incident.
