Goochland Schools announces new superintendent pick days after firing previous without cause

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Goochland County Public Schools has announced its new superintendent pick just two days after abruptly firing the previous one without cause.

On Tuesday, April 2, the Goochland County School Board convened for a special meeting, during which its members "unanimously terminated" superintendent Michael Cromartie.

No reason for his abrupt firing after less than two years on the job has been provided.

Two days later, on Friday, April 4, the school division announced it will vote to appoint Andrew “Andy” Armstrong as the new superintendent during its next school board meeting on Tuesday, April 8. If approved, Armstrong will assume the role officially on April 22.

"Dr. Armstrong, currently Associate Superintendent at the Virginia Department of Education, is no stranger to Goochland — he previously served as the GCPS Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Interim Superintendent from 2016 to 2023," the school division said.

Cromartie, whose termination was effective Friday, will receive a severance package. This will include the equivalent of a year's worth of his salary, which amounts to $189,000.
