Grace periods to soon end for speed cameras near Chesterfield schools, speeding drivers to be ticketed

CORRECTION: The article has been updated to accurately reflect the timeline for the speed camera grace periods.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The grace periods for some speed cameras near Chesterfield County schools are nearing their end. Soon, drivers will be paying the price for speeding.

As of Wednesday, March 12, several other schools’ speed cameras were still in a grace period and hadn’t started ticketing drivers yet. Those schools include the following:

  • Cosby High School -- with enforcement starting Thursday, March 13
  • Ecoff Elementary School
  • Reams Road Elementary School
  • Swift Creek Elementary School

The grace period is already over for drivers going through the Moseley Elementary School zone on Magnolia Green Parkway. Since Feb. 12, motorists have seen the flashing lights of the speed camera during arrival and dismissal times -- meaning the school zone speed limit is enforced, and the camera is taking photos of speeding cars.

The speed cameras monitor every passing car’s speed. For anyone going 10 miles over the school zone’s posted speed limit during arrival and dismissal hours, the camera records photos and videos, documenting the date, time, location, license plate and speed.

The driver is then mailed a $100 citation.

Chesterfield County said it's installing the speed cameras to protect students and enhance road safety. The county did a study in 2023 that found drivers going more than 10 miles over the speed limit in school zones was a “significant issue.”

The school zone speed limit at Moseley Elementary is enforced from 8:55 to 9:55 a.m. and again between 3:25 and 4:25 p.m.
