Hanover County offers property tax relief for elderly residents, those with disabilities

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Qualifying residents in Hanover County might be able to save up to thousands of dollars this season through a tax relief program.

The county announced on Jan. 21 that it's accepting applications for a real estate tax relief program for elderly residents or residents with disabilities.

Per the release, the program offers residents property tax relief on a sliding scale, meaning it's based on household income and property ownership. The program can help approved applicants save an average of $1,750 per year, with a maximum annual benefit of $3,500.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the program:

  • Be 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled
  • Be a full or partial owner of the property and live on the site
  • Have a gross household income of $60,000 or less. Income of relatives, other than a spouse, who live in the home must be included in the gross income.
  • Have a net worth of $400,000 or less, excluding the value of the home and up to 10 acres of land
  • Applicants in a hospital or extended-care facility may still qualify, provided their home is not rented or leased

Applicants must submit a full application every three years and submit a signed affidavit in the years between to maintain eligibility and continue receiving tax relief.

The application form can be found here. If you need assistance completing the application, visit the Chenault Weems Building, 7507 Library Drive, or call 804-365-6128.
