According to Virginia Department of Taxation, if you've received a refund verification letter, it means that addition documentation is requested to verify information on tax returns.
It doesn't mean that there's anything wrong, it's just an extra action that the department is taking to ensure that refunds go the right individual -- aiming to stop fraud returns before they go out.
How to respond to refund verification letter
Individuals will be able to respond online or by mail. The department recommends responding to online as the quickest way to get your tax refund. Read the verification letter carefully and follow the guidelines in the letter on how to respond.
For responding online:
If you have the following letter numbers, you can respond online: AUIN073A, AUIN073M, AUIN273A, AUIN373A, AUIN473A and AUIN573A.
Before logging in to Virginia Department of Taxation's portal, make sure you have your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), Correspondence ID from verification letter and year of tax return referenced in verification letter.
