HBCU rivals VSU, VUU to faceoff in 30th Freedom Classic Festival

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Longtime HBCU rivals, Virginia State University (VSU) and Virginia Union University (VUU) will return for another faceoff at the 2025 Freedom Classic Festival this weekend. Returning for its 30th year, The Freedom Classic Festival will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18 at VSU's Multipurpose Center, located at 20809 2nd Ave. in Petersburg. Doors will open at noon with the Women's Basketball game at 1 p.m. and the Men's Basketball game at 3:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. According to the organizers, the legacy of The Freedom Classic began on Jan. 14, 1996 -- which has since evolved into a beloved staple to the community that connects students, alumni and fans in celebration of the legacy and history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the Civil Rights Movement.
