‘Heart-wrenching’: Virginia political leaders react to deadly DC plane crash
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia’s political leaders are reacting to the deadly plane crash involving an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army helicopter outside Reagan National Airport in Northern Virginia. “It’s heart-wrenching to know that no one was able to be saved,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. Youngkin, who visited the crash site Thursday morning, says Virginia is doing everything it can to support the recovery operation and that the state will fully cooperate with federal investigators as they work to determine the cause of the crash. “I spoke with so many of the first responders early this morning that have been up all night trying to rescue people and are so committed to making sure that although they are not able to be rescued, they want to recover so that they can be reunited with their families,” Youngkin explained. Meanwhile, State Senator Jeremy McPike, who is also a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Prince William County, is asking Virginians to think about the first responders who bravely worked to save lives in the cold and dark Potomac River. “What those first responders have to deal with and see, working as hard as they can to find any survivors and working through the reclamation of bodies is just tremendously impactful. It’s something that they are never going to forget,” McPike told 8News.
