Henrico 21-year-old killed in crash near University of South Carolina campus
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 21-year-old University of South Carolina student from Henrico County was killed in a crash near the university's campus on Wednesday, according to police.
At around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, a driver -- identified by the Columbia Police Department as Rosali I. Fernandez-Cruz -- allegedly failed to yield the right of way while turning left at the intersection of Blossom and Assembly streets near the University of South Carolina's campus.
Twenty-one-year-old Nathanial Baker of the Glen Allen area of Henrico County was riding a motorcycle west on Blossom Street when police said he was hit by the truck Fernandez-Cruz was reportedly driving.
According to police, Baker was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
After the crash, officials said Fernandez-Cruz did not stop or render aid to Baker and did not report the crash to police. He reportedly drove away from the scene and allegedly ran from the vehicle.
Police said a nearby Columbia Police officer found and detained Fernandez-Cruz at the 1100 block of Greene Street. Two male passengers were reportedly in the vehicle with Fernandez-Cruz during the crash and also ran from the scene, according to officials. No charges are pending against them, police said.
After researching Fernandez-Cruz in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, Columbia Police officers reportedly learned he was wanted by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Police have communicated with ICE regarding Fernandez Cruz’s arrest.
A spokesperson for the University of South Carolina provided the following comment regarding Baker's death:
Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Nate’s family and friends during this difficult time. Counseling staff are actively working with those impacted and services are available to any member of our campus community affected by this tragedy.
