Henrico speciality coffee shop to close its doors

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A specialty coffee shop in Henrico County is closing down, with its last day of service set for just a few days before Christmas. "Dear friends, it seems as though our little experiment in the field of suburban specialty coffee and specialty coffee foods is drawing to a close," said Surrounding Counties in a Nov. 25 Instagram post announcing the closure. Surrounding Counties, located at 8801-A Three Chopt Road, describes itself as a destination where "specialty coffee [is] paired with wanderlust-inspired culinary creations." Since its opening in Oct. 2020, it has served up teas, coffees and a variety of breakfast fare, including kolaches. "It was within these walls we truly mastered the craft [of making kolaches] and put Virginia on the kolache map," Surrounding Counties said. "Building on the lessons learned as part of the lamplighter team, we believed then as well as now [that] there is a desire for high-quality morning foods and beverages wherever you call home. While the world was navigating the 2020 pandemic shutdown, we set out to prove it." The coffee shop did not go into great detail as to what prompted the closure, saying "the exact specifications of the space we created our home in do not allow us to carry forward any further." Surrounding Counties will officially close on Sunday, Dec. 22. "We will be treating the month of December as a closing [ceremony,] complete with a party to send us off," Surrounding Counties said. The coffee shop added that, following the closure, it will review data from the business' four years of operations to better understand whether or not it was successful. "It is likely that those results will show that this concept makes sense because it makes money," Surrounding Counties said. "If that turns out to be the case, be on the lookout for the evolution of the suburban specialty coffee foods concept coming soon to a strip mall near you."
