Here are the top 5 events happening in RVA this weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- This weekend Richmond will be full of events ranging from musicals to performances by local musical groups. See who's performing and how to prepare for this fun-filled weekend.

Loving V. Virginia Richmond Premiere

Richmonders can see the live opera adaptation of the infamous Loving V. Virginia case from Friday, May 9 to Sunday, May 11 at the Dominion Energy Center. The performance is in commission with the Virginia Opera as they celebrate their 50th anniversary season. Tickets will be available via the etix website or the Virginia Opera website.

Chicago The Musical

One of Broadway's longest running musicals will be making its way to Richmond from Friday, May 9 to Sunday, May 11. The musical has been performed for over 27 years with over 10,000 performances, six Tony Awards, two Oliver Awards and a Grammy. Showtimes will be Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Altria Theater. Fighting Gravity

Local Richmond band Fighting Gravity will take the the stage this Saturday, May 10 at Brown's Island this Saturday as a part of the Live Loud Concert series. The concert will also feature the Pat McGee Ban and Virginia Coalition. The gates will open at 6 p.m. at the Fifth Street entrance only -- tickets can be purchased here.

The Avett Brothers

North Carolina folk-rock band "The Avett Brothers" will be performing this Thursday, May 8, at the Virginia Credit Union LIVE. Attendees can hear their folk-rock hits like "I and Love and You," "Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise" and more songs from their self-titles album "The Avett Brothers." The concert will be at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.

Moving Art 2

The second installment of the "Moving Art" series "Moving Art 2" from the Richmond Ballet is making its way to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) starting this Thursday. The show will feature three ballets.

  • "Slump"
  • "Echoing Past"
  • "Fading Creatures"

The shows will take place from Thursday, May, 8 through May 18. Tickets can be purchased through the etix website.
