Hopewell councilor Yolanda Stokes dies at 64

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- Yolanda Stokes, councilor of Hopewell's sixth ward, died on the day before Christmas Eve, according to a city spokesperson. She was 64.

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, the city of Hopewell announced in a press release that councilor Yolanda Stokes died on Dec. 23 at 64 years old.

The city said that although Stokes served Hopewell for a short time, her impact was "immediate and lasting."

She was described by the city in the release as being a woman of deep faith who was actively involved in her church and known for her love of singing.

She reportedly shared stories, wisdom and Bible scriptures often with those around her.

Despite facing illness, the city said Stokes served residents of the sixth ward with "passion, courage and integrity."

The city added that she was a longtime community advocate and a strong supporter of voter engagement.

Stokes became Hopewell's voting registrar in 2018, according to the city. She was then elected to the Hopewell City Council in 2024.

Stokes is survived by her son, Xavier, as well as extended family members.

"Her leadership, compassion, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed," the release said.

Hopewell Mayor Johnny Partin and fellow City Council members shared their sentiments following Stokes' death.

"Councilor Stokes will be deeply missed," the group said. "Her love for the community was evident in all she did, and we are holding her family close in our thoughts and prayers."
