Hopewell expands Urban Agriculture Opportunities

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- A zoning ordinance amendment that would allow for more urban agriculture opportunities throughout Hopewell was approved unanimously by the city council on Tuesday.

Hopewell City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 14 to approve an amendment that would include Urban Agriculture Uses and Performance Standards -- which supports sustainable food production and development of green spaces, per a county release.

This amendment would create opportunities within a variety of urban gardening and farming activities, such as:

  • Yard Garden (or Residential Garden)
  • Community Garden
  • Market Garden (or Urban Farm)
  • Urban Agriculture (Indoor)

Urban Agriculture, as defined by the ordinance, is the use of land for cultivating herbs, flowers, fruits, vegetables or ornamental plants, primarily for selling or donating to public or non-profit organizations.

"This is a great step forward for our community and improving the quality of life for our citizens. This will provide increased opportunities for citizens and businesses to participate in Urban Agriculture and have access to fresh produce."
