Hopewell opens cooling station for residents to stay safe in extreme heat

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- As extreme heat moves in across Central Virginia, the city of Hopewell has opened a cooling station to help residents stay safe.

Hopewell typically opens a cooling station when temperatures are 92 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

From June 23 to June 27, the Hopewell Community Center at 100 W City Point Road will function as a cooling center, according to a Facebook post from the city.

On Monday, June 23, the station will be open from noon to 7 p.m. From Tuesday, June 24 to Friday, June 27, the station will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., per the city. Water will also be provided.

Starting on Saturday, June 28 and ending on Sunday, Aug. 31, the cooling station will change locations to the Old Bank of America Building located at 101 E City Point Rd. and will be open all week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For the time that the cooling station will be at the community center, Hopewell provided the following guidelines for people to follow:

  • Patrons are only allowed to use the front lobby, which includes restrooms and a water fountain.
  • Access beyond the lobby is not permitted.
  • Use of other facility amenities -- locker rooms, showers, sauna, pool, gym or equipment -- is strictly prohibited.
