Hopewell restores full operations after electric failure at wastewater treatment plant

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- After its wastewater treatment plant experienced a late-night electric failure on Friday evening, the City of Hopewell announced that they fully restored operations. However, a permanent fix is still necessary.

According to a release from the city, the Hopewell Water Renewal (HWR) has "successfully restored full operational capacity at the facility following the recent electrical failure."

A permanent repair remains scheduled for completion by Friday, July 18.

The facility lost power at the headworks of the domestic influent system at around 11:50 p.m. Friday.

The power failure caused the equipment to be inoperable, leading to overflow conditions at the influent screens.

"There has been no disruption to residential sewer service, and the drinking water supply remains safe," the city said.

The city added that officials notified the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that the situation is "fully contained and all systems are functioning properly," according to a release.
