Hopewell Sheriff’s Office promotes 13-year-old cancer survivor to auxiliary deputy

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- The Hopewell Sheriff's Office has promoted a 13-year-old cancer survivor to auxiliary deputy.

According to ABC News, Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel is a 13-year-old who aspired to become a police officer but was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018.

When the Hopewell Sheriff's Office heard of his story, deputies were touched and decided to reach out to the family's local sheriff's office in Texas.

The sheriff's office then were connected with Daniel's father, who gave his permission for the sheriff's office to send a care package, including a certificate that promotes Daniel as auxiliary deputy.

Daniel also received patches, an ID card and two pins for the sheriff's office.
