How to gamble safely if you choose to bet on the Big Game

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With the Big Game fast approaching, the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) wants to remind people that any risks you take aren't guaranteed to come with a reward. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs will face off on Sunday, Feb. 9 -- and quite a few Americans are expected to place bets on who will win. According to the VCPG, in 2024, 68 million Americans placed wagers totaling over $23 billion on the big game. As the U.S. sees continuing growth across casinos, sports betting apps and other platforms, this year, that betting is expected to hit a record high. “As friends and families join together to participate in one of the biggest sports wagering events of the year, we want to remind people of the risks involved with gambling,” said Carolyn Hawley, president of the VCPG. Sports betting is already legal in 38 states and mobile sports betting is legal in 30 states. This kind of growth spike leads people to become addicted fast, according to the VCPG. “Many people are developing problems very quickly due to the onset of sports betting legalization along with the growth in options on mobile devices for sports betting,” VCPG wants Virginians to consider these following tips to be responsible while gambling: Don’t let gambling interfere with family, friends, work or school. Don’t gamble to cope with emotional or physical pain. Accept losing as a part of the game. Don’t gamble to get money to pay bills. Don’t borrow money to gamble – not even from yourself.
