‘I want peace’: Richmond cold case detectives take over 2021 homicide

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department cold case unit has taken over the investigation into the 2021 death of 24-year-old Dylan Poonsammy, as his family continues their plea for answers.

Sherry Poonsamy, Dylan's mother, has visited 404 Rivertowne Apartments on Westover Hills Boulevard year after year since her son was shot and killed in the parking lot four years ago.

“My feelings haven't changed," Sherry said. "Four years later — and yet I'm here again."

According to the Richmond Police Department, Dylan was shot in the back several times on the night of Oct. 24, 2021. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In November 2021, police arrested and charged a person with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Dylan's death. They were later released because there was not enough information to keep them in custody.

Sherry describes her son as a driven father of two who would give anything he had to a stranger.

“I just want justice and some peace," she said.

Sherry said she has waited years for answers as to what happened to her son.

RPD's cold case unit recently took over the case after the previous detective retired.

"We're getting close to putting the puzzle together," said Detective Sgt. George Wade. "We just need those extra little pieces.”

Until then, Sherry said she will do everything she can to keep her son's legacy alive.

“I want peace. I don't rest, I don't sleep. Four years later and here I am standing, praying and asking you guys to come out and speak," Sherry said.

The RPD continues to investigate Dylan’s death. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Jeffrey Crewell at 804-646-5324 or email jeffrey.crewell@rva.gov.
