Improv Festivus returns to CSz Richmond Theater for 14th year

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Looking to have a laugh? Improv Festivus, an improv comedy event, will be returning to the CSz Richmond Theater this weekend. On the morning of Monday, Dec. 9, 8News Anchors Delaney Hall and Autumn Childress met with Dave Gau to learn more about what folks can expect. If someone has never been to an improv comedy show, Gau said there's a lot to enjoy. "Well, people make up scenes, games and songs on the spot. And Improv Festivus is a festival where over 100 improvisers are coming from across the country, some from Canada," Gau said. "We have 20 different troupes doing shows, and it's this big, unique festival that Richmond gets every year." Gau added that one of the big names headlining the show is Craig Cackowski, an improviser and actor who has been featured in "Drunk History" and "Community," among other movies and shows. He explained that this year's event will be its 14th rendition, and it began when an idea came about to invite multiple guests all at once for a big improv showcase. When asked what the key is to good improv, Gau said it all comes down to "being real." "The key to good improv is being real," Gau said. "You don't try to be funny, you just connect because so much 'funny' comes from real interactions, right? Look around you, the things that you laugh at, those are the real moments you believe." The festival will span from Thursday, Dec. 12, through Saturday, Dec. 14, at the theater, located at 8906 West Broad Street in Henrico County. To find more information and grab your tickets, visit the festival's website. To participate in workshops, camps and classes, visit CSz Richmond Theater's website.
