Injured hiker rescued by Med-Flight 24 hours after similar rescue of hiker in another county

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State Police's Med-Flight 1 rescued an injured hiker in Rockbridge County on Tuesday, about 24 hours after a similar rescue of a hiker in Madison County.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, Virginia State Police's Med-Flight 1 was called to rescue an injured hiker -- identified as a teenage girl -- from Devil's Marble Yard, a remote hiking area in Rockbridge County.

After the request, Med-Flight 1, piloted by Virginia State Police Pilot Curt Conlin and staffed by Chesterfield Firefighters Russell Horne and David Webb, flew to the victim.

According to Virginia State Police, Webb was lowered to the ground, where the victim was then secured and hoisted to Med-Flight 1.

The patient was then flown to an area command post for assessment. Officials said that because the patient was stable and from the Richmond area, the decision was made to fly her back to a hospital in Central Virginia.

The crew then returned to the rescue site and picked up Webb, reloaded the patient from the command post and returned to Chesterfield County.

Officials said the request for the rescue came 24 hours after Med-Flight 1 made a similar rescue of an injured hiker in Madison County on Monday, March 31.

According to state police, Pilot Conlin piloted for both of the rescues. The rescue on Tuesday came on the 41st anniversary of the creation of Med-Flight.
