‘Irreversible damage’: Mock crash scene created at Orange High School

ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Orange County High School prepared a mock crash scene to showcase to students the dangers of impaired driving.

Orange County Public Schools, Orange Fire and EMS, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, and Virginia State Police collaborate to create this event.

They demonstrated the potential consequences of minors deciding to drink and drive after prom. This demonstration included the 911 call, the relevant first responders, the extraction of victims and the involvement of a funeral home.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), about one in four teen car crashes involves an underage drinking driver.

"Driving under the influence doesn't just affect the driver -- it endangers everyone on the road," said a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. "In just a few seconds, a single poor decision can cause irreversible damage."

This mock crash, though hard to look at, shows the danger that comes with choosing to drink and drive. The organizations involved hope that this will help discourage teenagers from making that decision.
