‘It gives me so much anxiety’: Petersburg resident fed up with loud alarm in apartment complex
PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A Petersburg resident says an alarm coming out of her apartment complex's car wash center has been ringing constantly for about one year -- and she is beyond fed up. Ciara, who would only wish to have her first name mentioned out of privacy, has been living at the 1200 Acqua Apartments for two years. According to her, the ringing has only gotten worse over time. "About two to three times a day, it'll go off -- so far [today,] it's only gone off once, but it's still early," Ciara told 8News when we visited the apartment complex on Monday, Oct. 14. "But when it goes off, it'll go off for like 30 minutes ... or, last night, it went off for like five hours." Ciara said the noise, which she can hear clearly from inside her apartment, has been causing her to have anxiety. The sound itself is triggering. "I cannot sleep well, I can't study during the day — it just interrupts my whole day," Ciara said of how it affects her. "It gives me so much anxiety and it gives my dog so much anxiety. It starts freaking out my cat as well." While interviewing Ciara, the 8News team had the chance to hear the alarm. These team members described the sound as painful to their ears and said they had to raise their voices to be heard when talking to each other. At the time this happened, the alarm was ringing in the presence of the property's employees. 8News crews spoke with the property manager, Dawn Wilder, who explained she is new to the property. She said there are multiple factors for the ringing. "It's an overflown drain that we have to have a vendor for -- and then it's the breaker that we turn off so that the alarm does not go out," Wilder said. Wilder said her team will work on the issue and that she is in touch with vendors about the problem. Ciara told 8News she will continue to provide updates on whether or not this is resolved.
