RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The 3rd annual K-9 Veterans Day Dog Walk was held this weekend to remember military dogs and honor their service.

The walk was held at the Virginia War Memorial on Saturday, March 8 starting at around 10 a.m. Those that participated took around a half mile walk on the memorial grounds to honor and remember the sacrifices of service dogs in the military and in law enforcement as well as other areas of service.

There were markers placed along the route to honor particularly special military dogs -- with attendees gaining a "pawsport" at each educational stop. People also had the opportunity to get dog caricature portraits done of them and their pets.

8News got the chance to speak with Robert Mays, a Vietnam veteran and former dog handler, about why an event like this is important for the community.

"I think the public gets to know and understand what the military dogs do, not only in the military, but in civilian life," Mays said. "How many lives they save and keep them from coming into harms way... a lot of people don't understand what these dogs do."
