Man accused of Jacob Baldwin’s murder arrested after apparent bond violation

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The man accused of killing a 27-year-old Chesterfield County man during an altercation in Richmond's Scott Addition in 2024 was arrested on Thursday after an apparent bond violation.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, officers with the Richmond Police Department found Jacob Baldwin of Chesterfield face-down and unresponsive in the intersection of West Marshall and North Sheppard streets.

He died in a local hospital four days later as a result of a head injury he reportedly sustained after being knocked to the ground by a punch.

A week after the initial assault, on Oct. 19, 2024, 27-year-old Nico Rivera of Richmond surrendered himself to police. He has since been charged with Baldwin's second-degree murder and will stand trial in October.

Rivera has had multiple hearings to discuss the conditions of his bond -- which included that he remain on house arrest, that he not contact witnesses related to the case and that he undergo drug testing, among other stipulations. Most recently, in April, his bond was modified to allow him to leave his family's home to go out into the yard.

According to online court records, a motion to revoke Rivera's bond -- seemingly due to a related violation -- was filed on Monday, June 30.

On Wednesday, July 2, a capias -- or a "bench warrant" which orders an arrest -- was issued for Rivera, with online court records listing Rivera as a fugitive.

The Richmond City Jail confirmed to 8News that Rivera was arrested and taken into its custody on Thursday, July 3.

8News is still working to confirm the nature of Rivera's bond violation, as well as the dates and times of any additional court hearings that may come from this process. An update will be provided when possible.
