Man charged with eluding law enforcement, DWI after chase in Caroline County

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man has been charged with eluding law enforcement and driving while intoxicated following a chase in Caroline County on Tuesday.

At 8:39 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, a sergeant with the Caroline County Sheriff's Office reported that a black sedan he was attempting to pull over for speeding and no state inspection would not pull over, but instead sped up and began making erratic maneuvers.

According to officials, the driver attempted to turn into a driveway that turned out to be gated, then went back onto the highway while speeding and cutting off several vehicles.

The sheriff's office said the sergeant stayed with the sedan, then reported that the vehicle drove into the Pineview Deli parking lot while speeding, slid to a stop, then the driver reportedly jumped out of the car and ran.

Officials said the sergeant chased the driver on foot and took him into custody as he attempted to climb over a fence.

The sheriff's office identified the driver as Devonne Izaha Richardson, who the sergeant said showed signs of being intoxicated.

After further investigation, Richardson was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated for a blood alcohol concentration of 0.20 g/210L, over twice the legal limit, felony eluding law enforcement, speeding and no valid state inspection sticker.

Richardson was reportedly taken to the Pamunkey Regional Jail under a $1,500 secure bond.
