Man charged with murder after Prince Edward woman’s remains found in state park

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Lynchburg man is facing a murder charge after a 23-year-old woman's remains were found in a state park in Prince Edward County.

At about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, two bicyclists found the remains of 23-year-old Samantha Okinyi of Prince Edward in High Bridge Trail State Park.

Virginia State Police opened an investigation into her death, believing it to be suspicious.

Nearly a week later, on Friday, Aug. 29, state police arrested 28-year-old Demetrius Brown of Lynchburg and charged him with Okinyi's second-degree murder.

He is awaiting processing in Lynchburg as of the time of reporting, per state police.
