Man fatally shot by Virginia State Police Special Agent in burglary attempt

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- A man was fatally shot following a burglary attempt into the residence of a Virginia State Police Special Agent in Virginia Beach on Sunday morning.

Virginia State Police say the incident happened around 11:45 a.m. in the Bay Colony neighborhood.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a 40-year-old man attempted to break into the agent's house. A physical confrontation then ensued between the agent and the man, which resulted in the agent discharging his service weapon and striking the man.

The 40-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he eventually died from his injuries.

The off-duty agent sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment.

VSP are asking people to avoid the Bay Colony neighborhood as the scene remains secured. The incident is still under active investigation.
