Man fighting for life after shots fired during police warrant at Richmond apartment

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man is fighting for his life after police say they heard shots fired while executing a warrant at Belt Atlantic apartments on Wednesday morning.
At around 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, officers with the Third Precinct, as well as the Richmond Police Department's SWAT team, tried to execute a search warrant in the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike, as a result of an ongoing investigation.
According to police, officers "announced their presence as police" multiple times. A woman left the apartment shortly after, and when officers were outside, they heard gunshots from inside.
Police said two men then left the apartment, and police were told that there was an injured man still inside.
When officers entered the building, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital with a life-threatening injury, according to police.
No officers were injured, and no officers fired their weapons during this incident, officials said.
Police continue to investigate this incident, and ask anyone with information to call Major Crimes Detective A. Sleem at 804-814-7123.
