Man in custody after stand-off with Campbell County Sheriff’s Office deputies

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man is in custody following a standoff with Campbell County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) deputies on Friday, which involved the use of chemical agents.

At around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, deputies with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office were called to conduct a wellness check at a residence on Pacoman Road.

When deputies arrived on scene, a person, identified as 50-year-old Ronald Lee Day, Jr., reportedly displayed a firearm and voiced threatening comments.

According to the sheriff's office, Day fired one round before retreating back inside the residence. Deputies then created a secure perimeter around the property, and additional law enforcement units responded to the scene.

"The CCSO Special Team and the Lynchburg Police Department Tactical Team were activated and assisted in securing the location," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

After several hours of negotiations, which included trained negotiators from the CCSO Crisis Negotiations Team, as well as the use of chemical agents to help with Day's surrender, he was taken into custody without further incident, according to officials.

Day has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm and was taken to Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

This incident is still under investigation. CCSO asks anyone with information related to this investigation to contact investigators at 434-332-9580.
