Man shot, killed on VSU campus, university was on lockdown

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man was shot and killed on Virginia State University's (VSU) campus late Saturday evening, resulting in the university going into lockdown.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department responded to the 20900 block of Third Avenue near the VSU multipurpose Center.

When they arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound.

The victim, who VSU said is not a registered VSU student, died at the scene, according to Chesterfield Police.

The school was placed on lockdown following the incident, but according to VSU, the lockdown has been lifted and the campus remains "secure" as of about 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The victim's identity is pending notification of next of kin.

No further details are available as of the time of reporting, but officials ask the community to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
