Maryland man dead after running off road, hitting tree in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Maryland man is dead after his vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree early Friday morning on Interstate 95 in Prince George County.

Virginia State Police said the crash happened around 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, on I-95 southbound near the 37-mile marker. According to state police, a Ford pickup truck hauling a trailer ran off the road and hit a tree.

The driver, 64-year-old Randall Howells of Indian Head, Md., died at the scene.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), all lanes are open and the scene is clear, but there are three miles of backups.

Police are still investigating what caused the crash.
