Maymont welcomes new horse with Secretariat pedigree to its farm in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Maymont has welcomed a new horse to its farm in Richmond, which officials said has a pedigree of several notable racehorses including the legendary Secretariat. According to Maymont, a retired thoroughbred mare from Maryland named Lorna was welcomed to the Maymont Farm this week. Lorna came from the Equine Welfare Society, a horse rescue organization based in Keswick, Virginia, and joins Maymont's other horses, 29-year-old Dani and 18-year-old Artie, who are retired carriage horses and longtime residents of the farm, according to Maymont. Maymont describes Lorna as a bright chestnut mare who stands 64 inches from the ground to her withers, which is a ridge between a horse's shoulder blades. Lorna was reportedly born in 2011 and had a brief career as a racehorse and broodmare under the name Count My Blessings until she was retired and placed with the Equine Welfare Society. According to Maymont, Lorna's pedigree includes the legendary Secretariat, the Virginia-born-and-raised 1973 Triple Crown winner, as well as other notable Kentucky Derby winners Northern Dancer and Swaps. "Longtime horse racing fans might note a resemblance in her coppery coat and white star marking to another of her great great-grandsires, Alydar, who was famous as the archrival to 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed," Maymont said in its statement. Maymont said Lorna is already proving to be a good companion for Artie and Dani. “Lorna seems to enjoy her new surroundings and her new companions. She is a natural at posing for photographs and seems to know when cameras are pointed in her direction,” said Parke Richeson, President and CEO of Maymont Foundation. “Maymont is happy to give her a new forever home.”
