Medical license revoked for Richmond-area oncologist accused of sexual assault

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Following multiple sexual assault allegations, Richmond-area oncologist Attique Samdani's medical license has been revoked by the Virginia Board of Medicine.

The decision to revoke Samdani's medical license came during a unanimous vote among the Virginia Board of Medicine in a formal hearing on Friday, June 27.

The board does not have the authority to permanently revoke a license, and can only revoke one for three years, or in specific circumstances, five years.

Although Samdani's medical license was revoked, he is not facing any criminal charges, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Police said Samdani has faced three allegations of sexual assault. For two of the three survivors, the statute of limitations had reportedly passed, and the third survivor does not want to pursue charges.

Samdani's license was previously suspended by the board on March 20 after multiple alleged violations of Virginia's Regulations Governing the Practice of Medicine.

Samdani was previously listed on HCA Virginia’s website as a doctor affiliated with the Virginia Cancer Institute, Johnston-Willis Hospital and Chippenham Hospital, but has since been removed. His specialties include hematology, or the study of the blood, and oncology, or the study of cancer. His medical license was first issued in 1998.

Samdani is accused by the board of “[making] inappropriate comments and touch[ing] intimate parts of [a woman’s] body over her clothing against her will for his own sexual gratification,” doing so “while acting as a professional mentor and/or under the guise of performing and/or teaching [her] how to perform medical examinations.”

The alleged incident described by the board occurred in July 2024 and involved an unidentified woman who traveled to America to participate in medical observerships with Samdani and other doctors after graduating from a medical school in Pakistan.

Police asked anyone who believes they may have been a victim to come forward.
