Miyares holds rally in Chesterfield, says ‘eyes of the nation’ are on Virginia

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Republican incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares (R) is urging Virginia voters to make their voices heard ahead of Election Day.
Miyares held a rally in Chesterfield on Thursday, Oct. 30, during which he told voters he is the only candidate qualified to be Virginia’s Attorney General.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us, Virginia,” Miyares told voters. “The eyes of the world are on us. This is now a referendum on 'What kind of decency are we gonna have in politics?'”
According to Miyares, the race for attorney general is about more than politics -- it's about rejecting violent political rhetoric after we learned Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, sent text messages in 2022 suggesting a former colleague and his kids should be killed.
“How can we trust Jay Jones to ever comfort a mother that has lost her child to violence, knowing he’s advocated for it?” Miyares asked.
Texts vs. Trump: Virginia voters to decide which is more important in Attorney General’s race
Utah Attorney General Derek Brown (R) and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) echoed the same sentiment, saying Jones has disqualified himself from being Virginia’s top cop.
“If Virginia elects someone who frankly, I would never hire in my office, and probably wouldn't even make it through a background check, that sends a message,” Brown said. “That sends a message to the country.”
A spokesperson for Jones' campaign sent 8News the following statement regarding the rally:
"While 23 attorneys general fought to stop Donald Trump's cuts to food assistance and ensure kids had enough to eat, Jason Miyares was off campaigning with other Republican AGs, turning a blind eye to the millions of Americans – including 850,000 Virginians – who rely on SNAP benefits. Virginia deserves an Attorney General who will put their interests first, and Miyares’ campaign stop makes it clear that Jay Jones is the only candidate who can do that."
